Duke Nukem Forever - Only 3 years in development?

Duke Nukem Forever - Only 3 years in development? The former employee of 3D Realms Mark Skelton aka Marks not only has posted the Duke Nukem Forever high-res 3D renders, but he also has revealed some details of the development situation. Whilst technically 'in development' for well over a decade, it would appear from his words that it has only been in the past two or three years that any real progress been made. Of course, that's just a single opinion, but nevertheless it sheds some light on the DNF mystery.

The Mystery of Duke Nukem Forever

The Mystery of Duke Nukem ForeverThe truth behind the situation of Duke Nukem Forever will never be discovered, but pulling together some sparse facts and rumours gives us quite an interesting picture.

Today Kotaku has posted the Duke Nukem Forever screenshots from the art director Tramell Isaac and the concept art from the artist Layne Johnson- 16 images in total. Let me repeat that slowly: SIXTEEN images after 12 years of development and 8 of them are concept art. No doubt, the guys are talented and experienced, so the question is- what was going on all these years?

2 days ago the game developer Charlie Wiederhold who worked at 3D Realms 1998-2006 (8 years) reposted his disclaimer-free The Chair Story. While the story is obviously fictional, it still contains some real details and interesting thoughts about the importance of Duke Nukem Forever for Unreal Engine.

Charlie Wiederhold writes:
...3DR had some other stuff up their sleeves that would be generating so much revenue for 3DR that they could continue on indefinitely... or at least another 5-10 years... without making a dime on internal development. Scott being the marketing buff he is (and Mark Rein being pretty much the same for Epic), they got this idea for how to generate the biggest story in the history of gaming. DNF being a monster hit is fine, but it wouldn't make "forever" history. As you can tell from the name and what I'm about to describe, Scott and George apparently had this idea from the very start but weren't sure they were going to act on it, but there wasn't any harm in using a name that would play into it. So in order to make "Forever" history there was only one way to do that, and that is to turn it into something completely unprecedented in the industry. Turn it into the sort of thing that will be talked about 100 years from now.

A day or so later Charlie replaces the story with his apologies, but could have been this 'entertaining' fiction inspired by some real events?
